Northern Star Award

The Chamber will be recognizing Bruce Caplain, Executive Director of Bike the North Country with the 8th Annual Northern Star Award. This award was established to honor individuals, businesses, or organizations that have made a significant contribution to the North country in promoting economic development, our natural resources in and around the notches, and a quality of life fostering a climate in which commerce, recreation, and tourism will flourish.

As the founder of Bike the North Country, Bruce founded the non-profit organization Bike the North Country with the mission of promoting cycle tourism in the local towns of Bethlehem, Franconia, and Littleton. As part of this mission, Bruce has worked to ensure that trails are accessible for riders of all abilities, including those using adaptive bicycles like three-wheeled recumbent tandems. Bruce has helped secure grants totaling $400K to fund the production of regional cycling maps, the construction of information kiosks throughout the area, and provide security bike racks throughout the tri-town area. He has advocated with local trail organizations, such as Bethlehem Trail Association and Parker Mountain in Littleton, and Franconia Area NEMBA to construct trails wide enough and with mild grades to support adaptive riders; his organization has purchased or refurbished over a dozen bikes for Adaptive Sports Partners, a non-profit that facilitates recreation – including biking – for individuals with disabilities. He has established a bike loaner library in the three towns of Bethlehem, Littleton and Franconia allowing individuals to borrow bikes and other outdoor gear at no cost – an initiative that enhances accessibility and encourages bike use among locals and visitors.

Bruce has been actively involved in service to the Town of Bethlehem, having served as a member of the Bethlehem’s selectboard for two terms and as a member of the Sustainability Working Group focusing on encouraging sustainable practices within the community and introducing initiatives like Plastic-free July in partnership with local organizations. He has been an active contributor to the Bethlehem Energy Commission and was instrumental in coordinating the installation of the solar panels that provide energy sufficient to power all of Bethlehem’s municipal needs. He also continues to head the Traffic Calming Task Force in an effort to implement traffic calming measures in Bethlehem that will then be able to be used in Franconia and Littleton.

He is also a board member, and treasurer of New Hampshire’s bike and walk advocacy group, the Bike-Walk Alliance of NH, and a member of the Complete Streets Advisory Committee to the NH DOT.

Bruce serves as the Treasurer for the Colonial Theatre and has been an active contributor of time and energy to the vision of the Colonial Theatre in supporting a vibrant, engaged, and enriched community through arts and culture.

This event is open to the public and cycling enthusiasts are welcome to attend
