The award winning and highly acclaimed band Le Vent du Nord are a leading force in Québec’s exciting and progressive Francophone folk movement. The group’s vast repertoire draws from both traditional sources and original compositions, while their highly rhythmic and soulful music, rooted in the Celtic diaspora, is enhanced with a broad range of global influences.
Since first launching in August 2002, Le Vent du Nord have enjoyed meteoric success, performing well over 2,000 concerts over 4 continents and racking up several prestigious awards, including a Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros, two Junos (Canada’s Grammys), a Félix at ADISQ, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and “Artist of the Year” at Folk Alliance Annual Gala.
The group regularly appear on Canadian, American, French, and UK television and radio and have participated in a wide variety of special musical projects that exhibit their great finesse and flexibility. They’ve collaborated and performed with a diverse range of artists including: Harry Manx, Väsen, Dervish, The Chieftains, Breton musical pioneer Yann-Fañch Kemener, Québécois roots legend and master storyteller Michel Faubert, the Scottish folk band Breabach, Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis, and the trans-Mediterranean ensemble Constantinople.
Le Vent du Nord look beyond the standard approaches to tradition in their collaborations and they’ve also created a symphonic concert that, according to Voir Montreal, “puts all traditional folk naysayers to shame.”

What is classical music? What is jazz? What happens when you mix the two together? What is a concerto? What is a song? Who was George Gershwin? Why is he considered the most popular American composer in the whole World? To find out the answers to these questions, and more, come celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gershwin’s amazing Rhapsody in Blue with the North Country Chamber Players.
Our featured soloist for the Explorers concert will be pianist, EJ Hwang. In addition to being an outstanding jazz pianist, she is also a successful composer, teacher and lecturer. She will be joined by nine musicians for this magnificent performance.
Because of the gracious support of New England Wire Technologies, as well as Kate and Tim Vaughan, the Explorers Concert is a free event and open to the community. The performance will be held at the Boys & Girls Club of the North Country, Lisbon, NH.
Seating is limited so please reserve your seats.
All ages are welcome as we explore together.

Since the start of her musical journey, Sophie B. Hawkins has shown an uncompromising devotion to her singular truth, endlessly transcending boundaries and offering up new ways of experiencing the world around us. Her acclaimed 1992 album Tongues and Tails achieved massive global success and earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist, vaulting Hawkins into the limelight and revealing her as a cultural luminary way ahead of her time. Rooted in Hawkins’s raw yet poetic lyrics and effortlessly captivating vocals, the music expands on the colorful eclecticism that’s always permeated her music, encompassing everything from folk to soul to Brill Building pop.

Thunderstorm Artis is a singer/songwriter born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu. He learned at a very young age to play piano, guitar, harmonica and drums, from his father, Ron and mother, Victoria. He has shared stages with Train, John Legend, Zac Brown and Jack Johnson. However, he is most known for being a finalist on the NBC show “The Voice” Season 18. His music crosses many genres including Folk, Rock, Soul and Country. At his concerts he has been known to jump into Bowie, Beatles, Elton John and Leonard Cohen, as well as mixing in his own heartfelt originals. No matter what Thunderstorm performs, he does it from his heart. He does not consider his music as notes on a page but rather a window into his soul. His strong belief is that through music he can make the world a better place and lift the hearts of others.

Mozart and Mendelssohn are considered the two greatest prodigies in the history of western music. One might argue who was the greater early talent, since they both composed pieces before their 20th birthdays that are still mainstays of the classical repertoire, but there can be no dispute that, during their brief lifetimes, they both penned some of the most beautiful and compelling music ever written.

Maya de Vitry
Maya de Vitry’s vibrant voice seems to rise out of some necessity of bringing songs to life, embracing listeners with what Folk Alley calls a “soulful intimacy”. She grew up in a musical family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, understanding music to be a place of gathering, a way to spend a summer night around a campfire. Maya first traveled and performed as a fiddling street musician, and then in bars, theaters, and on festival stages as a founding member of The Stray Birds (2010-2018). Since the band parted ways in 2018, Maya has been devotedly creating a powerful new body of work – one that consistently blurs genre while showcasing her delight in storytelling and her extraordinarily dynamic singing. Whether she is playing with her electric band in a bar or sharing a song on acoustic guitar at a folk festival, there is an emotional immediacy and a striking magnetism in Maya’s music. She has been invited to support a variety of tours – she has warmed up stages for innovative singer-songwriters like John Craigie and Aoife O’Donovan, and bands like Mighty Poplar and The Wood Brothers. In addition to performing and recording, Maya is a sought-after co-writer and co-creator, and has been steadily and closely collaborating within her chosen musical community of Nashville, TN for nearly a decade. Maya has released 3 full-length solo records (Adaptations, How To Break a Fall, Violet Light), 1 EP, and a series of singles. Her latest release is a 5-song EP, Infinite (released 10/20/23).
“The perfect soundtrack for uncorking that emotion and (defiantly) loving life again” – NPR
“An emotionally moving – and gripping – delight” – No Depression
“Her voice is among the most ethereal and pure in roots music” – Glide Magazine
Griffin William Sherry
Living somewhere in-between modern catharsis and American myth, Griffin William Sherry’s roots continue to grow strong in the ever-evolving genres of Folk, Americana and Rock & Roll. Griffin’s music is inspired by his New England rural roots. As such, he cobbles together an inimitable signature style, visceral and heartfelt, loud and passionate, each song taking on a voice of its own.
In 2011, He co-founded the independent band The Ghost of Paul Revere, capturing the hearts and minds of countless fans with a series of acclaimed releases and sold-out shows everywhere. He helped establish his own music festival, performed on national television, and garnered millions of streams. In 2019, his song The Ballad of the 20th Maine became the official Maine State Ballad, securing The Ghost of Paul Revere’s place in Maine music history.
In 2022, after writing music for seventeen years, Griffin’s begun work on his first solo record, taking a defiant step in a new direction.

Three hundred years after they were written, Bach’s Six Concertos for multiple instruments stand as a monument of instrumental music. During the Baroque Era, for the wealthy, the Concerto Grosso was a popular music genre. Trying to capitalize, Bach probably wrote this set of pieces as a job application, which failed miserably. 150 years later, they became known as the Brandenburg Concertos, several of which were not performed in major capitals, like London or Paris, until the early 20th century.

Hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie,” Nashville resident Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster child for intersectionality,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and, with the release ofher new, hope-fueled, love-filled social justice album Changemakers, Matthews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of Matthews, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” Matthews began performing in 2010 but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 NewSong Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects — her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The Imagineers, and her EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers, which tackles social justice themes. Matthews also won the People’s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance.
