Each Chanukah since 2019, members of the Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation have gathered in front of the Bethlehem Town Hall to light our community chanukiah. Former fire chief Jack Anderson (now retired), who is responsible for lighting the town’s Christmas tree each year, made the suggestion that there should be a menorah as well as a tree, and the members of our congregation thought that was a terrific idea.
We dedicated our community chanukiah to the memory of Sue Friedman, wife of former BHC Vice-President and Bethlehem Town Selectman Harold Friedman. A hardy bunch of BHC members and town friends brave the cold each night of Chanukah to screw in the next lightbulb and sing both traditional songs and knock-offs like “Feliz Chanukah.”
Anyone who is in the area is welcome to join. We meet at 5:00 pm each evening of Chanukah (4:00 pm on Friday evening), December 14-21, in front of the Bethlehem Town Hall at 2155 Main St., Bethlehem.
