The Bretzfelder Park Committee and the Forest Society are hosting “Darkness in the Daytime” on Wednesday, March 6 at 6 p.m. at Bretzfelder Park in Bethlehem. The talk will be presented by Douglas Arion, PhD is the director of Mountains of Stars, a public science outreach and education program.
Join the Forest Society to learn more about the Great North American Eclipse on April 8. For the second time in seven years, the moon will cover the sun and create a total solar eclipse. This time the total eclipse will cross northern New Hampshire providing Granite Staters with front row seats to the astrological event. What do we know about the sun, and how are we connected to the universe by experiencing this amazing event? A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, the total eclipse is not to be missed.
About the Presenter:
Douglas Arion, PhD is the director of Mountains of Stars, a public science outreach and education program that engages the public with ‘environmental awareness from a cosmic perspective’ and is Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy and Donald D. Hedberg Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Entrepreneurial Studies at Carthage College. He founded the college’s Griffin Observatory and led observing programs at Yerkes, Steward, and Kitt Peak National Observatories.
He co-founded Galileoscope to provide high-quality, low-cost telescopes for worldwide promotion of science education. Initially launched for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and the International Year of Light 2015, more than 270,000 are now in use in over 110 countries, and a new edition featuring solar filters for the upcoming eclipses is now available.
Arion led the effort to create the AMC Maine Woods International Dark Sky Park, which protects over 100,000 acres in Maine, the last substantial dark sky region in the eastern two-thirds of the United States. He launched the production of Defending the Dark, a documentary on dark skies in Maine that has been shown on PBS across the United States and at several major film festivals.
Arion is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, a member of the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union, has received the Distinguished Service Award from Sigma Pi Sigma (the physics honorary society), the Volunteer Leadership Award from the Appalachian Mountain Club, and the Dark Sky Defender Award from the International Dark Sky Association. Event Details
The Bretzfelder Park Committee and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is hosting The Wonder of Hummingbirds, An Introduction to these Fascinating Birds, on March 13 at 6 at Bretzfelder Park in Bethlehem.
Join Elizabeth (Betsy) Fraser to learn what has the weight of a penny, an average speed of 27 mph, and has a metabolism that is 300 times faster than an elephant’s. Enjoy a discussion about the numerous species of hummingbirds, where they reside and how diverse the species are. Fraser will focus on Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, the “hummers” that are found in the eastern United States, including New Hampshire.
March seems early to discuss hummingbirds however, the migration of Ruby Throats from the tropics heading northward is already underway. We’ll explore where they are in their migration and how to use various databases to track their progress northward, reaching our area by early May. If you are a hummer aficionado, come and share your information. Or if you’re just getting started, come, and learn tips on how to make your yard attractive to hummers. Fraser will discuss types of feeders, how to make nectar and how to set up your garden to attract hummers. She’ll share experiences of hummers swarming at the feeder, helping hummers make it through a freak May snowstorm, and having hummers eat out of her hand.
The free program is interactive and designed to engage and educate audience members of all ages.
About the Presenter
Elizabeth (Betsy) Fraser is a New Hampshire native who grew up in Littleton. She earned a Master of Science and PhD degree in the Environmental Sciences at Colorado State University and embarked on a career in the pharmaceutical industry. During her working years, she had the opportunity to lead worldwide programs in environment, health, and safety for major pharmaceutical companies. Her work involved extensive travel and working with colleagues located around the globe. She worked at Sanofi’s headquarters and lived in Paris, France for several years. Upon retirement, she returned to New Hampshire settling in Sugar Hill. She loves the outdoors, gardening and all things related to nature. She’s been an avid student of Ruby Throated Hummingbirds since the early 1990s and always enjoys the opportunity to talk hummers with others who are fascinated by these small birds.

Event Details
Off-road and additional readings are $25 each.
Psychic Fair Weekend began in April 1986 with just two psychics and a handful of people attending the event. In 1988, Sharon and Betty Muldoon were planning a visit to the area when they heard Psychic Fair Weekend would be going on. Interested in what this might entail, they booked a stay at the resort, spent the weekend at one of the first Psychic Fairs, and loved every second of it.
When they got back home to Massachusetts, Sharon could not stop raving about their time to all of her and Betty’s co-workers. Sparking an interest in everyone she spoke to, she worked with the Indian Head Resort to bring up a group of about 20 women to the next Psychic Fair. The time finally came, and the girls had such a fun time spending the weekend getting readings, hanging out in the lounge and just enjoying the property that they decided to make it an annual trip. They continued visiting the resort every April for Psychic Fair, calling themselves the Stargazers.
But before they knew it, word of the event had spread all over. Sharon and Betty were getting calls from friends of friends of friends asking how they could be a part of the fun and come to Indian Head’s Psychic Fair. Soon enough, word had spread even further and what was once an annual co-workers getaway, turned into a huge event. It had so much demand, we decided to add another weekend in November of 1994 to allow even more Stargazers to join.
Sharon and Betty went on to coordinate all of our semi-annual Psychic Fair Weekends for years to come. They are both a huge part of the reason why Psychic Fair is what it is today and why so many Stargazers visit us year after year for this special event.
Today we dedicate every Psychic Fair Weekend to Sharon, who passed in 2007. Many of our Stargazers were personal friends with Sharon and remember her as a light in the life of so many. We all know that her legacy lives on in every Psychic Fair Weekend.
